Multivitamin: Health Insurance You Can Swallow
Although headlines often focus on single-nutrient studies, multivitamin supplements offer many significant benefits:

  • Enhancing nutritional status. A study published in a 2007 Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that only half of middle-age and older men and women obtained the recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals from their diets. However, 80 percent of supplements users did achieve the recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals.

  • Slowing DNA damage. Damage to DNA accelerates aging and increases the risk of cancer and heart disease. In a study of 80 elderly subjects, researchers found that a daily multivitamin supplement reduced DNA damage (Mechanisms of Aging and Development, 2007).

  • Reducing inflammation. Elevated levels of C-reactive protein promote inflammation. Two studies found that multivitamin supplements lower CRP levels in people. That’s significant because inflammation is now regarded as an underlying cause of heart disease, Alzheimer’s and many cases of cancer (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2008, American Journal of Medicine, 2003.)

  • Boosting mood. A study of hospitalized seniors in England found that a high potency multivitamin and multimineral supplement led to significant reductions in depression and improvements in mood. (Clinical Nutrition, 2007)

  • Preventing birth defects. Pregnant women who took multivitamins were 64 percent less likely to give birth to an infant with cleft lip, according to a 2007 British Medical Journal article.

    Tips for retailers
When advising customers, remember two more points about multivitamins:

  • A high-potency multivitamin should contain at least 20 mg of each of the major B vitamins – B1, B2 and B3. The remaining vitamins should be in relatively consistent amounts or ratios.

  • A high-potency multivitamin can save customers money compared with buying separate supplements of vitamins E, C and B complex.
